Hollywood Casino 400

Rain washed out all practice and qualifying for the Hollywood Casino 400. This forced the field to line up by the metric, putting Joey Logano out front. He lined up next to Kyle Larson for 267 laps at Kansas Speedway. Because of the lack of track time, teams were given a competition caution around Lap 35.

Stage 1

Four laps into the race, Larson had put a second on the field. By double-digit laps, his lead was nearly three seconds and growing. His lead grew to over five seconds, but Austin Cindric was slowly closing in when the competition caution came.

Larson and Denny Hamlin restarted the action out front on Lap 41. Once again, Larson worked his way out front and set sail. In the closing laps of the stage, Hamlin closed to within a second, but it was too little, too late, and Larson earned the stage win.

Stage 2

Larson and Hamlin were the leaders at the start of stage two. On Lap 104, Cindric worked around Hamlin and set his eyes on Larson, who had a five-second lead.

The first caution for incident came on Lap 114 when Noah Gragson blew up. This brought the field to the pits and returned Larson and Hamlin to the lead.

As soon as the green waved, the caution was back out as multiple cars went sliding and spinning.

Lap 128 brought the next restart with the same duo in the lead, but Cindric quickly cleared Hamlin. With 26 to go in the stage, Larson finally put a second, and then some, on Cindric. After that, Larson’s lead grew by the lap – enough for him to easily secure the Stage 2 win.

Stage 3

Following pit stops, Larson had a new dancing partner out front: Chase Briscoe. Briscoe remained on Larson’s bumper and attempted to make a pass; however, Larson’s car remained a rocket ship.

With 66 to go in the race, Briscoe had closed the gap to less than a second. Three laps later, Briscoe was on Larson’s bumper.

While Briscoe was working on Larson, Cindric inched his way into the battle, and green-flag stops began.

When Larson and Briscoe took to the pits, Cindric, then Hamlin, then Ryan Blaney, took the lead. Once the cycle completed, Larson and Briscoe resumed the lead.

Briscoe kept his sights set on Larson and, with 31 to go, Briscoe moved to the inside of Larson and into the lead.

The next lap, Larson fought to get the lead back, but clean air was king. With 20 to go, Larson was putting the heat on Briscoe, but the No. 19 held his lead.

With 11 to go, the fight was on. Larson was all the way against the wall in an attempt to make a move. A lap later, the No. 5 tried again to no avail.

With seven to go, Larson doored Briscoe for the lead and quickly took advantage of the clean air. Four laps later, Briscoe attempted to make one last run but got into the wall.

This not only gave Larson an even bigger advantage, but also P2 to Cindric.

The checkered flag waved, and Larson brought home his second win of the season.

Rich MARvelous Move of the Race

Despite not getting the win, we’re giving the Rich MARvelous Move to Chase Briscoe and the entire No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing team.

The Rich MARvelous Move of the Race is voted on by the Pit Pass Network staff following the NASCAR Cup Series race.

Not only did the team hit the nail on the head with the set-up (and no practice), but the pit crew was on fire with pit stops throughout the day.

This put Briscoe in prime position on track to make a run for the lead. Briscoe was one of a few drivers able to get close enough to challenge Larson.

Additionally, his P4 finish will boost morale for the No. 19 team as they come off a run of poor finishes (P32 at Gateway and P27 at Bristol).
