NOAPS Race Recap: HyVee Perks 250

Ryan Sieg brought a fast car to the corn fields of Iowa for the HyVee Perks 250. He started the race on the pole with Ross Chastain alongside him. Teammates Carson Kvapil and Rajah Caruth started the race from the second row. Justin Allgaier, the championship favorite, rounded out the top five. The stage lengths were 60 laps for the first and second stage with the final stage being 130 laps.

Ryan, Ryan, Ryan!

Chastain got a bad jump, which allowed Sieg to scamper away in the lead. Sheldon Creed slid into the top five after passing Allgaier and Caruth. He tried to get around Kvapil, but could not make the pass stick. Creed got stuck on the inside line, which allowed Kvapil and Allgaier to pull away.

Caruth fell to eighth after he struggled to get going on the start.

Allgaier passed Kvapil to climb onto the podium.

Creed and Kvapil battled side by side for fourth. They made contact while driving out of turn two. Creed could not make the pass, not for lack of trying.

Sieg built his lead to over two seconds. He benefited from a clear track in front of him.

The first caution came out on lap 27. Nathan Byrd got turned sideways on the exit of turn four, but was able to keep it off the wall.

Sieg and Chastain restarted on the front row. Sieg got another great launch with a push from Allgaier. Allgaier took second with help from Creed.

Jesse Love smacked the wall on the back stretch after experiencing mechanical issues. He got to pit road after getting loose in turn three. Love drove through the pits and was issued a speeding penalty. He served his penalty and then headed to the garage.

Sieg began to close in on lapped traffic. They slowed the leader down, which drew Allgaier closer. Allgaier made the finish interesting, but did not have enough to take the lead. Ryan Sieg led them all and got the stage one win in the HyVee Perks 250! Allgaier, Creed, Chastain, and Sammy Smith rounded out the top five.

Champions Patience

Creed and Smith restarted the race on the front row. Creed was able to take the lead from the outside line of turn two.

Sam Mayer, after restarting in fifth, made it three wide in turn one. He was able to get around Kvapil and then Brandon Jones.

The third caution came when Kyle Sieg overdrove turn one. He kept it off the wall and was able to keep going.

Creed and Smith restarted the race. Creed took the lead. Allgaier was able to pass Smith on the outside to take second.

Creed could not pull away. He was hounded by Allgaier lap after lap. They raced clean, but Creed could not hold him off.

Allgaier took the lead briefly. However, he got loose as soon as he got the lead, which allowed Creed to retake the lead. Allgaier was finally able to take the lead on lap 102.

Allgaier held onto the lead to win stage two in the HyVee Perks 250! Creed, Smith, Sieg, and Mayer rounded out the top five.

Cautions Begin

Allgaier and Creed began stage three on the front row. Allgaier quickly retook his lead. Creed remained on the rear bumper of the leader, not allowing him to get comfortable.

Allgaier inched away from the runner-up and was able to keep pulling away.

The fifth caution came out when Anthony Alfredo turned around on track. He was running 16th when he spun all by himself.

Allgaier and Smith brought the race back to green with 95 to go. Allgaier was able to get back out front. Creed pulled to the outside of Smith and took the runner-up spot.

Brent Crews got tight and made contact several times with Kvapil.

William Sawalich brought out the sixth caution after spinning out. Patrick Staropoli got into his left rear, which sent him around. Sawalich was getting beaten up the previous lap before he was finally turned.

Allgaier and Mayer were the only ones among the leaders who chose not to pit under the caution.

They restarted the race on the front row. Allgaier pulled away with Mayer in tow.

The field barely got back to speed before Carson Ware backed his car into the outside wall, which brought out another caution. Jesse Love drove into the rear of Ware, which sent him around.

Mayer and Allgaier restarted from the front row.  They were side by side as the caution came out again for the eighth time. Lavar Scott got turned around and backed into the outside wall. Smith was the one who pushed him around.

It Continues

Allgaier and Mayer brought the field back to green on lap 180. Chastain dove underneath Creed to make it three wide into turn one. Jeb Burton took third on the outside line. Creed continued to fall after slipping out of the top five.

Mason Maggio brought out the ninth caution. Staropoli was slowed by Parker Retzlaff. Brennan Poole ran into the back of Staropoli, sending him across the track and into Maggio. Maggio was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was turned around.

On lap 189, Chastain and Burton led the field back to green. Burton tried to take the lead from the outside but could not move forward. Kvapil split the front two and got around Burton to the outside of Chastain. Chastain took the lead after squeezing Kvapil out of turn four.

Allgaier gained eight spots on the first lap back to green.

Chastain pulled away by just under a second.

Corey Day stopped on track and brought out the tenth caution of the busy day. He was turned into the outside wall by Smith.

The Final Fifty

Chastain and Sieg brought the green back out. Chastain powered around the outside of Sieg to take the lead. Kvapil began to challenge for the runner-up.

Sieg tried for the lead on the inside, but could not make a run to take it. They battled hard for the top spot, but Chastain was able to hold him off every time. Chastain pinched Sieg, so he had to check up.

Kvapil caught Sieg and got alongside him. Sieg was able to clear him to hold on to second. That allowed Chastain to pull away.

Jeremy Clements made an unscheduled pit stop for a wheel issue.

Allgaier continued his climb and passed Austin Hill for fifth with 23 laps to go.

Kvapil finally got around Sieg for third.

Allgaier caught Creed and began to battle for the spot. He got alongside him but could not make the pass. He was finally able to make the pass with 17 to go.

Chastain caught a mob of lapped traffic, which slowed him up. Kvapil began to run the leader down.

Sieg was caught and passed by the quicker car in Allgaier.

Kvapil pulled to within half a second of Chastain.

Burton brought out the eleventh caution. His left rear tire went down, which sent him around.

Overtime in Iowa

Chastain and Kvapil restarted from the front row with Allgaier and Sieg behind them. Chastain spun his tires, and this allowed Kvapil to get away in the lead.

Brent Crews got into Sieg, who got into Allgaier. They went into the outside wall in turn one. That was the twelfth caution on the day.

Kvapil and Chastain brought it back to green. Caruth shoved Kvapil out front. Hill drove to the inside of Chastain to fight for third. He immediately got loose and slid into Chastain.

William Sawalich got around the chaos to take fourth.

Kvapil pulled away with Caruth behind him. Kvapil took the white flag and then the checkered flag to win the HyVee Perks 250! Caruth, Sawalich, Chastain, and Creed finished in the top five.

I am becoming a broken record. I do not know how many times I have said this. JR Motorsports is good. They are head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Kvapil, Allgaier, Smith, and Chastain all battled up front. They continue to be the class of the field. This new point system will reward their efforts with a championship. The series finishes its regular season at Daytona later this month!
